You want the easy upkeep of uPVC, but your home calls for the look of timber. That is exactly what woodgrain foil was invented for, and its quality has moved on considerably in recent years.
How does it work?
A foil with a woodgrain texture is applied to the uPVC profile, a texture you do not just see but also feel. The foil is fused to the profile, so it does not come loose or peel. Unlike painted timber it barely discolours: the foils are tested against years of UV exposure.
Which colours are available?
The classics are golden oak (warm oak), walnut and mahogany. Alongside those are more contemporary options that work well on new-build and extensions: grey oak, sheffield oak and black with a subtle grain. In total we offer more than fifty colours and textures.
A popular choice: woodgrain outside, white inside. On the street side the frame then matches the facade, while indoors you keep a calm, light finish. That is perfectly possible, because the foils are applied separately on each side.
How close does it come to real timber?
From a metre away you cannot tell the difference. Close up you can: the grain repeats, and you will not quite match the crisp detailing of a painted timber frame with a bead and rebate. What does help is the profile: choose a classic profile with a bead rather than a flat modern one and the whole thing comes a good deal closer.
Our advice: never let a photograph convince you. We bring physical samples to the measuring visit, so you can see and feel the grain in your own light.
What to watch out for
- Dark foils and the sun. A dark frame facing south gets hot. For that we use foil with a cooling layer and a profile with the right reinforcement, so the frame stays straight.
- Planning rules. In protected townscapes and on listed buildings, woodgrain is not always accepted. Check with the local authority in advance. We are happy to help you think it through.
- Extra cost. Woodgrain costs more than standard white. Expect a surcharge; how much depends on the colour and on whether you want inside and outside to differ.
- Maintenance. The same as for smooth foil: wipe down with water and mild soap. No abrasives, no aggressive cleaners. They damage the texture.
