When should you choose a sliding door?
A sliding door is the choice if you want plenty of light and a wide view without doors getting in the way. All the space stays free both inside and out, ideal with a patio right behind the house, an extension or a kitchen-diner. For an opening wider than 2.5 metres a sliding door is almost always the better option compared with French doors.

Lift-and-slide (HST) or Smart-Slide?
The HST 85 lift-and-slide door is the king: turn the handle, the door lifts off the threshold and rolls aside almost weightlessly. Sliding panels over 3 metres wide, a flush threshold possible and the best insulation and security ratings. This is the choice for large openings and for those who want the best.

The Smart-Slide is a parallel sliding door without a lifting mechanism: the panel first moves towards you a little and then slides aside. Slimmer, lighter and noticeably more affordable, up to about 2 metres per panel. A fine choice for openings up to around 4 metres on a normal budget.
What does a sliding door cost?
The price is mainly determined by the width, the type (lift-and-slide or Smart-Slide), the glazing and whether you want a flush threshold. A lift-and-slide door is built heavier and is therefore more expensive than a Smart-Slide of the same size.

Threshold: flush, low or standard?
The threshold matters more on a sliding door than you'd think. As standard it's a low threshold of a few centimetres. With a flush (level) threshold you step outside without a step up, handy with a pram or walker, or simply barefoot, and it looks sleek.

A flush threshold calls for good drainage: a threshold channel with an outlet and a patio that slopes slightly away from the house. That's exactly why we measure and fit it ourselves, so it stays dry inside even in driving rain.
Insulation, glazing and subsidy
A sliding door is a large sheet of glass. You want good insulation there. HR++ (U 1.1) is standard; triple (U 0.7) is worthwhile if you're insulating the rest of the house well too or live on a busy road. Solar control glass is an option if the door faces south or west and you want to limit overheating in summer.

Security
A sliding door at the back is a favourite spot for burglars, if it isn't up to scratch. Our doors have multi-point locking all round, mushroom cams and SKG** hardware; a lift-and-slide door also can't be lifted out of its track when closed. Want more? An RC2 version and laminated glass on the inside are available.

Installation, lead time and maintenance
After measuring, the door is made to size; allow a few weeks' production time. Installation itself usually takes one day, or two to three if the opening has to be widened. We work with minimal dust, seal inside and out and adjust the door so it runs smoothly and closes evenly everywhere.
